The Parable of the Squatter Kings

In today’s Gospel (Matthew 21:33–43), Jesus tells a story about a Landowner who built a pristine, fully functional vineyard—complete with a hedge, a winepress, a tower, and a turnkey operations manual. He leased it out to tenants and went abroad.

When harvest time arrived, the Landowner sent his representatives to collect his rightful share.

Instead of handing over the fruit, the tenants beat one servant, killed another, stoned a third, and finally executed the Landowner’s own son under the delusion: "This is the heir; let’s kill him and take the vineyard for ourselves!"

A, [ THE LANDOWNER'S REALITY ]

• Built the vineyard with His own capital.

[ THE TENANTS' DELUSION ]

• "We built this land with our own sweat!"

B. [ THE LANDOWNER'S REALITY ]

• Leased it out as a free gift of trust.

[ THE TENANTS' DELUSION ]

• "We owe no one any receipts, taxes, or thanks."

C. [ THE LANDOWNER'S REALITY ]

• Sent servants to collect what was agreed upon.

 [ THE TENANTS' DELUSION ]

• "Who are these auditors to question our harvest?!"

Jesus’ warning strikes at the heart of the modern delusion: forgetting that everything we have was given to us, and convincing ourselves that we are entirely "self-made."

Consider the everyday corporate or household squatter mentality: Driven by ungratefulness, the "self-made" tenant becomes a prisoner of greed. They can no longer enjoy their own harvest because they are too busy staring at their neighbor’s field, yelling during family dinners, and complaining that the universe hasn't acknowledged their absolute greatness.

As the Gospel notes, ungratefulness breeds violence and destroys peace, while a simple "thank you" restores the soul.

Nowhere is the Parable of the Wicked Tenants more vividly enacted than in Philippine politics.

The Republic is the vineyard, planted by the blood of ancestors and entrusted to elected officials through the temporary lease known as a Term of Office.

[ THE PHILIPPINE ELECTORAL LEASE CYCLE ]

THE LANDOWNER (THE CITIZENRY / GOD) ENTRUSTS THE VINEYARD (THE NATION)

OFFICIALS' RESPONSE: "KILL THE MESSENGER! THIS KINGDOM IS OURS FOREVER!"

A. WHAT THE CONSTITUTION / GOSPEL SAYS

• Public office is a public trust.

HOW THE WICKED TENANT ACTS

• "This office is our family heirloom!"

WHAT THE CONSTITUTION / GOSPEL SAYS

• Officials are temporary stewards.

HOW THE WICKED TENANT ACTS

• "We will pass this seat to my son, and mydaughter,

WHAT THE CONSTITUTION / GOSPEL SAYS

• Deliver the harvest (public funds) back to the true owners.

HOW THE WICKED TENANT ACTS

• "Confidential funds require no receipts

When the tenants in the parable executed the Son, they genuinely believed they had won.

They looked around the vineyard and thought, "Finally, we have total control! No more accounting, no more audits, no more Landowner!"They forgot the single most important rule of real estate: The Landowner always returns.

THE FINAL LEASE TERMINATION

"Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit."

In the end, whether it is a corrupt politician who treats government coffers like a private piggy bank, or an individual who lives in bitter entitlement without a shred of gratitude to God, the result is identical.

You cannot steal the vineyard from the One who built it. The lease will eventually expire, the auditors will complete their report, and those who refused to say "thank you" will find themselves locked outside the gates of the very kingdom they tried to claim for themselves
