The Parable Of The Yeast Vis a Vis The Current Political Landscape

 Today’s Gospel presentation brings us the Parable of the Yeast (Matthew 13:33), a remarkably concise one-sentence lesson with a profound impact.

Jesus describes a woman mixing a tiny pinch of yeast into three measures of flour until the entire batch of dough rises and doubles in size.

As theology reminds us, yeast is a powerful metaphor that cuts both ways - either good or bad.

In the chaotic kitchen of the 2026 Philippine political landscape, our leaders have mastered both recipes: the yeast of explosive growth and the highly toxic, infectious "yeast of the Pharisees."

Let us look at how a little bit of leavening is currently baking the biggest political drama in the country.

1. The Positive Yeast
In the positive sense, yeast represents how something microscopic can expand until it impacts the entire world. In our current political landscape, this is perfectly mirrored by the Yeast of the Audit Trail.

* THE TINY PINCH OF YEAST: A single, solitary signature on a confidential fund acknowledgement receipt under the name of a snack food: "Mary Grace Piattos."

* THE LEAVENED BATCH: A massive, nation-stopping Senate Impeachment Trial that has completely consumed the evening news, the NBI Cybercrime Division, and every TikTok algorithm in the country.

Who would have thought that a tiny, three-inch piece of paper could act like high-grade baking powder?

That single, unassuming name was mixed into the congressional archives, and within months, it caused the entire political system to swell up into an existential constitutional crisis.

It proves that accountability starts small, but once the yeast of truth gets to work, you cannot stop the dough from rising.

2. The Negative Yeast
But as Saint Paul warned in Galatians, “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough,” and Jesus explicitly defined the yeast of the Pharisees as hypocrisy.

The Pharisees are the pretenders—the power-hungry impostors who sound deeply religious and righteous on the outside, but inwardly possess zero regard for actual justice or consistency.

In the Senate plenary today, this negative yeast is spreading like a biological hazard, contaminating the minds of the electorate.

The Inward Reality (The Yeast of Hypocrisy)
The Spreading Contamination: Her righteous vocal cords, which were completely muted and paralyzed for a decade while critics were jailed, are suddenly supercharged by the mere mention of her brother’s unliquidated 2019 SEA Games cauldron.

This is exactly what Jesus was warning his disciples about. The "Yeast of the Pharisees" is a deceptive, creeping entity.

It starts with one politician redefining "Free Speech" to justify grave threats, spreads to another politician claiming a lateral transfer is a "political reward," and eventually infects the entire legislative body until the concept of equal justice is completely unrecognizable.

They use the Constitution as a personal baking apron—only putting it on when they need to protect themselves from getting burned.

The lesson of the Yeast leaves the Filipino people with a very important culinary choice as we head toward the future.

We are the dough. If we allow the yeast of hypocrisy, dynastic self-preservation, and selective amnesia to keep fermenting in our state institutions, the entire nation will end up sour, bloated, and completely unpalatable.

It is time to discard the old, contaminated sourdough starter of traditional politicians and look for leaders who understand that the law applies to the entire batch—not just to the ordinary ingredients.

This tactic is often a hostile way to insult, belittle, or distract from a legitimate discussion.

Classified in the same category are Ad Hominem Attacks: Instead of addressing someone's arguments, a person attacks the individual's physical traits.

Still others use Derailing Arguments. It is frequently used in disagreements to change the subject when a person is losing the debate.

It’s genuinely touching how the trolls respond to Rep. Gerville Luistro’s airtight logic—skipping the tedious task of actually understanding her argument, they simply resort to personal attacks. It’s their unique way of admitting they brought a plastic spoon to a sword fight.

Dahil wala nang masabi ang mga trolls… gawan na lang ng mga "laway" memes para ma-demoralize or maapektuhan man lang ang mic-drop na galing sa pagiging glib, slick and smooth-talking na si Luistro?

If you ever want to see intellectual bankruptcy in action, look no further than the DDS trolls. Confronted with the sheer beauty and logic of Rep. Chel Diokno's arguments, they panic and do what they do best: launch personal attacks.

They repeatedly mocked Chel Diokno for having prominent, "buck-toothed" teeth. These critics use his dental features as a running joke or a tool to body-shame him online, attempting to distract from his serious human rights and legal advocacy.

Pati ba naman mga senator judges kung hindi magresort sa ad hominem ... they resort to being rude? When Rep Gerville POLITELY asked if she is allowed to speak ... that was met by a haughty and condescending Not Really by Pia Cayetano.

Para bang sinabing niyang teritoryo ko ito ... so don't mess with me.

Following this, Luistro expressed that she felt "deprived of the opportunity to explain" her context.

Cayetano's demand for a notarized affidavit from Arturo Lascañas reflects standard Philippine procedure, but overlooks the fact that the ICC does not mandate notarization for its submitted documents.

Cayetano's objection over the document's lack of notarization reflects strict Philippine legal practices, whereas international criminal procedures do not enforce such requirements.

Lead prosecutor Gerville Luistro was fully justified in presenting the document. She committed no error in introducing the affidavit; rather, she displayed a stronger command of international criminal law than the challenging senator.

Unfortunately, an impeachment judge evaluated the evidence without first comprehending its legal origins and without first familiarizing themselves with its underlying legal framework.

You see, this is the lesson when you try to be rude and condescending, when you berate somebody to do their job well (as if she does hers?) and pontificate and give yourself the optics that you know it all and that you are above everybody.

It has its way of coming back and boomerang to your haughty face.
