The Great EDCA Debate: Are We Hosting a Party or Just Sharing Snacks

Welcome, dear readers, to the latest episode of “As the World Turns in Philippine Politics,” where the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) has become the hot topic of debate, and everyone seems to have an opinion—especially when it comes to the statements of former Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon.

In a stunning display of political gymnastics, she has suggested that the Philippines is vulnerable to missile attacks due to the presence of U.S. forces in the country.

Just like the Gulf States (Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, etc.), which are obviously neutral, in the US/Israel Vs Iran imbroglio, but are now the target of Iran's ire, so they have their own shares of the bombs.

But hold onto your hats, folks, because the rebuttal is here, and it’s about to get as spicy as a bowl of sinigang!

First off, let’s address the elephant in the room: Guanzon’s assertion that the EDCA sites are “American bases.”

Oh, no, no, no! According to our esteemed officials, they are NOT American bases.

They are Philippine military bases!

It’s like saying your friend’s house is a “party house” just because they occasionally let you crash there.

“Sure, you can hang out, but don’t get too comfortable! This is still my place!”

Let’s break it down, shall we?

These bases are owned by the Republic of the Philippines. “I repeat: owned by the Republic of the Philippines!”

It’s almost as if they’re trying to convince us that the U.S. is merely a guest who has overstayed its welcome.

“Oh, don’t mind me! I’m just here to borrow some sugar and maybe a tank or two!”

And then there’s the claim that these bases are under Philippine sovereignty.

“Yes, folks, sovereignty is alive and well!” they proclaim, waving their flags like cheerleaders at a pep rally.

“We command these bases! We decide who comes and goes!” It’s a comforting thought, really, that the Philippines is in charge of its own military facilities, even if Uncle Sam is occasionally allowed to drop by for a barbecue.

Now, let’s talk about the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement itself.

Under this agreement, the U.S. is allowed rotational access and can preposition equipment.

“But don’t worry!” our officials assure us. “We’re still the ones holding the keys!”

It’s like sharing your Wi-Fi password with a friend but insisting that you’re still the one in control of the router.

“Sure, you can use the internet, but I’m the one who decides when it’s time to log off!”

And then we have the Mutual Defense Treaty, which states that any attack on Philippine forces triggers obligations.

“That raises the cost of aggression dramatically!” they exclaim, as if they’re trying to sell us a new insurance policy.

“Don’t mess with us, or you’ll have to deal with our big brother!”

It’s a classic case of deterrence, where the mere presence of U.S. forces is supposed to keep adversaries at bay.

“Look at Japan, South Korea, and Germany!” they say. “They’re not being bombarded! They’re thriving!”

But let’s pause for a moment and consider the reality of hosting U.S. forces.

Are we really that secure, or are we just sharing snacks while pretending everything is fine?

“Oh, look! The U.S. is here! Let’s have a party!”

But what happens when the party gets out of hand? “Sorry, folks, but we can’t control what happens when the neighbors start throwing fireworks!”

In conclusion, the debate over EDCA and the presence of U.S. forces in the Philippines is a classic case of political theater.

So, let’s drink a toast to the politicians, the diplomats, and the ever-expanding definitions of sovereignty!

Here’s to the great EDCA debate, where we’re not just hosting a party; we’re making sure everyone knows it’s still our house!

After all, in the world of politics, the only thing more entertaining than the arguments is the way we try to spin them into something that sounds good on paper!
