Even the grammar police ... do make mistakes.

The day has come when this loquacious and verbose high priest of the English language admits that he can also have unwanted slips of the tongue ... and that he can stumble also in a situation where he has to make excuses and use the much overused and battered cliché: " Tao lang po ... nagkamali rin ... in the most unexpected time and places."

In an impassioned discussion with us when we met in the mall accidentally (we talked about the latest political scandal - the flood project scams). Though he did not see that coming ... he showed us, like any ordinary mortal, that he can be human too - that he is capable of making conversation blunders just like anyone else.

After making everybody uncomfortable, what with his tendency to use the King's language (which made our ears bleed)... his word bank was copious and abundant (nay, it was vast and extensive), it dwarfed whatever little confidence or knowledge we had ... we'd rather be a willing listener than become an active but stammering debater.

He pounds his hand on the table to emphasize his thoughts and points ... and who could ignore his American accent that is just too hard to handle? As he rattled words (that seemed easy as ABC) ... it was paralyzing, we could not beat him at his own game. It was as though our tongues were frozen ... or tied. Or just timid to make boo-boos under his umbrella.

The discussion lasted for an hour, then the moment we had been waiting for arrived.

Obviously, he was angered by the news that floods were becoming a habit (it is almost like eating rice three times a day), and the government-sponsored flood projects scam was the main culprit. He was livid, nearly breathless ... and he was oblivious of the words that came out of his mouth.

"The Blue Ribbon Committee hearing was ANTI-CLIMATIC ... (when the CLIMATE and the floods are threatening the lives of the people) ... why drag the investigation and make it snail-paced when you can name names (senators and congressmen) right away?"

Anti-climatic was heaven-sent. Was this the opening we needed ... to taunt him or make him get off his high horse? If we let it pass ... we will miss the opportunity of a lifetime to rub his verbal gaffes in his face.

If we confront him with his mistake ... we don't want to sound rude. We decided to do it anyway because we are curious as to what his reaction will be.

"I think what you mean is ANTI-.CLIMACTIC ...", I started teasing him.

His lips swelled up, and his face turned crimson.

"You don't have to be ashamed, my friend. Anybody can make mistakes (even to the syntax sheriff like you. ... It can happen to anyone ... nobody is exempt.

Obviously, you were upset ... and emotions at times distract the best of you and your train of thought." I consoled him.

"OO naman. Tao lang po. Pwede ring magkamali", was all he said.

In Tagalog, the word "assumed" has negative connotations in today's parlance.

When used colloquially pwede mong sabihin CJ is "asyumera" or "presumera." Wala pa ngang announcement ang organization nag-assume na na siya na nga. Talagang atat na atat if you want a better term ... pero refinement and good breeding prevailed at naghintay talaga si CJ for Nawat to make it official.

Sa pagkataong ito naghihintay lang ang ating mga kapitbahay ng isang pagkamali ... para mapulaan na naman si CJ. But CJ has mastered the art of "pause and stand by" ... and twiddle with her thumbs habang nagbabangayan pa ang dalawang kampo. She did her waiting with finesse and class at wala man lang masabi ang buong Asya.

Sino ba naman ang hindi excited? Oo pinangarap niyang manalo and when Rachel Gupta resigned, hindi siya nag-assume or nagpresume na siya na nga ang gagawing reyna.

I said What ... did he really mean what he said? Or was it just a slip of the tongue?

While invoke is to call on (a deity or spirit) for instance in a prayer, as a witness for inspiration. It means you pray to, plead with, beseech, implore, or supplicate. It also means to cite or appeal to (someone or something) as an authority for an action or in support of an argument.

Somebody differentiated the two terms: "When you evoke something, you draw it out, be it an action or emotion but when you invoke something, you call upon it. An easy way to remember it is that when you invoke a being or person, their presence will evoke a feeling or reaction from you."

Pareho din yan sa sitwasyon ... when somebody panics dahil malapit na ang taning ng kanilang asiignment ... at wala siyang magawa kundi matulala? Imbes na may gagawin .. aba eh na frozen at naparalyze? DEAD-ENDS at DEADLINES kung baga.

It can happen to anybody not even Queen D who is a top media influencer and content creator (with millions of followers to boot) ...  is immune to game show (Family Feud) jitters and fits. This is not a slip of the tongue if MJ was looking at the board. May hint na nga sa board ... but MJ insists on answering using his gut feeling ... (eh kung lalamya lamya ka diyan sa pagsagot ... after three seconds nagbuzzer na)

Is this another classic case of a slip of the mind? A lapse in memory ... an oversight ..., a mental lapse ..., a brain freeze, or just plainly the person has blanked out? Or the people behind this are just too unobservant... inept ... or disregardful of any important details?

These are big sins of OMISSION and COMMISSION if you were to ask me. How can you make this type of mistake ... CJ Opiaza is your invited guest ... and then the image in the tarpaulin is Rachel Gupta? Malapropism is defined as the mistaken use of a word or group of words in place of a similar-sounding word or phrase, often with unintentionally amusing effects.

It is an unintentional humorous misuse of a word or a phrase of similar sound resulting in a non-sensical humorous utterance. Malapropism is a verbal error ... when somebody hears it ... they perceive it as funny, amusing, and laughable.

Malapropism was coined after Mrs. Malaprop a character from Richard Brinsley Sheridan's play The Rivals (1775) who is noted as somebody who is fond of using the WRONG word with a sound resembling the RIGHT word. Her actions gave rise to the English word malapropism, meaning a misapplication of a word, especially one that sounds like the intended word but is humorously wrong in context.

Mrs Malaprop comes from the French phrase mal à propos (which means inappropriate). A malapropism is also called a malaprop, acyrologia, or Dogberryism.

Is malapropism the same as a slip of the tongue? 

Malapropisms happen because the speaker genuinely confuses meaning with form. The speaker is bewildered and perplexed so he mixes up (things, ideas, etc). He confused his talk with irrelevant details and he failed to recognize the difference between; a mistake (one thing) for another.

Malapropisms are SLIPS OF THE TONGUE and this may be caused by tiredness ... or fast speech.

We have been saying that malapropism is unintentional.  It can be intentional when the actor deliberately recites malapropism lines written in the script of a movie or a TV show to create a comic effect. 

Malapropisms are a linguistic phenomenon that occurs in everyday speech, but they are also used deliberately as a literary device.  In literature and comedy, writers sometimes deliberately use malapropisms to inject humor or to add color to their work.

Examples of misuse of words:

1.  She was wearing a pink CASSEROLE (a deep pan) instead of a CAMISOLE (sleeveless undershirt)

2. I dance FLAMINGO (bird) instead of FLAMENCO (Spanish dance)

3. My father was confined in the hospital for swollen ASTER-OIDS (meteors) instead of ADENOIDS (lymph tissues).

4. Our plan to go to the beach was NIP IN THE BUTT (ass or behind) instead of NIP IN THE BUD (flower shoot)

5. Russia and Ukraine FOR ALL INTENSIVE PURPOSES agreed to a ceasefire instead of FOR ALL INTENT AND PURPOSES.

6.  The STATUE OF LIMITATION is a law that describes the duration in which parties involved in a dispute initiate legal proceedings instead of STATUTE OF LIMITATION. A statue is a sculpted figure while a statute is a law.

Slip Of The Tongue ... Or Lethologica?

 An occasional slip of the tongue or a slip of the pen is normal and is quickly forgiven by the person listening or reading... that is ... if they even notice it. Even when they do, most people most of the time will recognize a slip of the tongue or pen for what it is and realize that what you meant to say or write ... is not what you did say or write.

Another blogger actually (he is one of my favorites ... (maybe because of his brave and solid stance against the enemy of the government). He made a booboo yesterday. ... I didn't call it a slip of the tongue because the guy is aware that he used a word that he feels is inappropriate or ill-suited. It is just that he can't remember the right word.

The phenomenon of not remembering the right word has happened to me lately ... and I hate it. The word is right there at the tip of my tongue ... and I just could not remember it.

I think that's what happens to the blogger. He was talking to his audience and was comparing the past and the present regime. So he mentioned "comparization" ... and being a true-blue grammar police shook me out of my wits ... and I paid attention. At the back of my mind ... I know what he meant to say was "comparison". (To our reader's benefit ... there is no such word as comparization in  English.)

A lot has been playing in my mind ... and one of them was that my favorite blogger/commentator is also capable of making blatant silly mistakes and blunders and showing he is human after all.

He felt awkward after saying the word, but he was sharp enough to recognize that something was off. So he commented immediately ... did I use the right word ... correct me if I'm wrong? he was asking his blog followers. And true enough ... one follower wrote: "Maybe you mean 'comparison". And he agrees.

LETHOLOGICA is the technical term for this type of forgetting. Like many other English terms associated with the mind, lethologica is derived from classical Greek. In this case, the Greek words are Lethe (forgetfulness) and Logos (word).

Lethologica is common among seniors and older people. It is sometimes called the "tip of the tongue phenomenon". If the word you want to say is right on the tip of your tongue, the person is aware that he knows it and can remember it sooner if not later.

It is considered a speech error (for instance, the blogger mentioned above). He has a strong feeling of knowing the target word, but unfortunately, he experiences retrieval failure.

If a person can't remember somebody's name, it is called LETHONOMIA ... that came from the Greek word Lethe (forgetfulness) and Nomina (name).

My favorite vlogger is trending again because of her occasional slips that are just too awkward for comfort. She was too elated that former Vice President Atty. Leni Robredo the former nemesis of BBM is too generous with her praises regarding the current administration's handling of the West Philippines Sea.

This time she fanned the embers of controversy when she used UNITEMENT instead of UNITY or UNITED.  She said: "Kritiko ako ni VP Leni noon ...  hindi ko talaga inaasahan na yong mga dating Kakampinks noon ay may hidwaan tayo ... sa ngayon ay nagkaroon tayo ng UNITEMENT." Something to that effect.

Oxford English Dictionary says UNITEMENT is an obsolete word and is not used at present. Proof of that is that if you are going to type unitement ... Grammarly corrects you right away that you are using the wrong word.

The earliest known use of the noun "unitement" is in the mid-1600s.

Oxford English Dictionary's earliest evidence for unitement is from before 1637 ... (almost 4 decades back) in the writing of Nicholas Ferrar, a religious writer, and administrator.

So did our vlogger make some slips of the tongue? Or was it a case of malapropism - cases where an incorrect word is used in a sentence that sounds like the correct word but means something completely different? 

Or was it spoonerism? -  (a situation where a speaker accidentally mixes up the initial sounds or letters of two words in a phrase).

Or our vlogger is just in a state of decline where she fumbles words because of her eagerness to say something ... and becomes oblivious to her use of the language ... grammar ... syntax ... and semantics.

The YouTube vlogger I told you about in the previous post about slips of the tongue ... did it again.  In my last post, she made a slip saying "congenistal" instead of a congenital liar. Here she comes again with another slip ... or was it a booboo this time?

She is a true blue pro-administration loyalist, and there was a nameless follower who fed her with information and was hiding under the name UNANIMOUS.

The vlogger is a staunched defender of the current regime and she wants to emphasize her point by repeatedly highlighting the words uttered by unanimous ... unanimous ... unanimous ... ad nauseam. 

Did the vlogger ever realize that the letter sender meant she wanted to hide under the name ANONYMOUS instead of UNANIMOUS? Dahil magkatunog and 2 salita  akala siguro ng letter sender tama ang ginamit na word. (Homophones is a word that sounds the same as other words but has a different meaning and/or spelling. Example flower and flour.)

And perpetuating the mistake by not making a disclaimer that the sender prefers to be called this way ... boomeranged to her. The blog's visitors feel hindi rin alam ng host ang pagkakaiba ng 2 salita.

She should have totally covered herself by stating the obvious.

Anne Curtis - Bulol

 

Ann Curtis is a female version of Ryan Bang. They are both hosts of It's Showtime and it is ironic that both enjoy the best of both worlds (passing the stringent standards of ABS CBN (in hosting) and enjoying the support and love of their fans) 

Despite their inability to talk straight characterized by long pauses ... stuttering and stammering ... (bumbling and stumbling) ... by virtue of their "bulol" one-liners ... netizens are always on the look-out as they elbow each other ... who can dish out the best entertainment meme of the day as they meet dead-ends at deadlines.  

Both are making a name for themselves by making bulol-type hosting ... a sure-fire ingredient to make a balanced battery of hosts. So if Eat Bulaga wonders what makes It's Showtime tick ... they need one host with a speech defect - one that is almost eager to share her idea - but the words get stuck, frozen and glued ... and the idea gets lost in translation. 

When Ann wrote in her account: "Luh. Kumilimlim dito sa QC" ... that was met with friendly and respectful sneers and jeers.  "Ate Ann ... bakit maski sa pagtype bulol ka?"

Like a true trooper ... Ann smiled at the netizen's reaction and dismissed it like a pro.

Can we classify Ann's bungling and bobbling as a SLIP of the tongue or pen?

I don't think so.  From the get-go Ann admits it is hard for her to pronounce or spell Tagalog tongue-twisters (especially yong mga malalim na)... but let her speak in English and she can articulate her thoughts well.  English is her first language ... and Tagalog ... her second. 

Just like Ryan Bang (who is Korean first) ... maintiendihan natin kung ano ang mga gusto nilang sabihin ... hindi man perfect Tagalog ... pero pwede-pasar na. Sila yong mga bulol na cute ... stammering and stuttering ... pero lovable naman.
