The Last Will Be first, And The First Will Be Last."

Jesus told his disciples this parable (The Parable of Workers In The Vineyard) from the Gospel according to Matthew 20:1-16a)

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a Big-Tech BPO Company and Agricultural Conglomerate operating in Metro Manila that went out at 5:00 AM to hire contractual contractuals for its vineyard."

The 5:00 AM Shift (The Early Commuters)
After agreeing to pay them the statutory minimum wage—roughly ₱755 a day under the newly issued Wage Order—he sent them into the vineyard.

THE 5:00 AM COMMUTER EXPERIENCE

• 3:30 AM: Wake up in Bulacan/Cavite.

• 4:15 AM: Fight through a 300-meter MRT queue.

• 5:00 AM: Clock in, sweat-drenched, coffee in hand.

• Expected Compensation: ₱755 + severe back pain.

These workers endured four hours of EDSA gridlock, two broken MRT escalators, and three UV Express transfers just to log their first billable hour.

The Midday Additions
Going out again at around 9:00 AM, noon, and 3:00 PM, the Landowner found others who were stuck in traffic, delayed by torrential rains, or waiting for their 6-month endo contracts to be renewed at HR.

"You too, go into my vineyard," he said, "and I will give you whatever is just."

[ THE TIME-STAMPED HIRING CYCLE ]

5:00 AM WORKERS: Bathed in sweat, braved flooded underpasses. ---> 3:00 PM WORKERS: Showed up right after the aircon turned on. ---> 5:00 PM WORKERS: Arrived just as HR was distributing evening snacks!

At 5:00 PM—just as the shift was wrapping up—he found a group standing near the water cooler doing TikTok trends. "Why do you stand here idle all day?" he asked.

"Because no agency hired us, Boss. Zero experience, must be 18–21 years old with a 4-year degree," they replied.

"Go into the vineyard," he said.

The Pay Slip Audit
When evening came, the Landowner said to his Payroll Specialist: "Summon the workers and give them their pay, starting with the ones hired at 5:00 PM and ending with the ones who woke up at 3:30 AM."

When the 5:00 AM pioneers stepped up to the cashier, they expected an additional Overtime Differential, Hazard Pay, and Traffic Stress Allowance. But each of them received the exact same ₱755.

Naturally, the 5:00 AM shift began to grumble against the Landowner:"Boss, unfair 'to! Itong mga pumasok ng 5:00 PM, isang oras lang nag-type sa Excel, wala pang pawis! Kami, sumabak sa baha sa Taft Avenue, pumasok nung bagyo, tapos pareho lang kami ng sinahod?!"

THE LANDOWNER'S CORPORATE REJOINING: "Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree to the ₱755 rate? Take what is yours and go. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with my own corporate budget? Or are you envious because I am generous?"

The Moral of the Modern Vineyard
In the Philippine corporate context, the parable yields two distinct realizations:

Spiritual Reality: Grace is not an hourly wage. God's generosity does not operate on punch-cards, tenure, or how many years you spent suffering in the administrative heat.

Electoral Reality: If this happened in a local government unit, the 5:00 PM arrival who got paid the full day's wage would instantly be appointed Department Head, while the 5:00 AM worker would still be waiting for their contractual regularization paper after 10 years.

For the last shall be first, the first shall be last, and everyone on EDSA will still be stuck in traffic regardless of when they left the house.

Pope Leo XIV said: The story taught us that the labourers from the first hour are disappointed: they cannot see the beauty of the gesture of the landowner, who was not unjust, but simply generous; who looked not only at merit, but also at need.

God wants to give his Kingdom, that is, full, eternal and happy life, to everyone. And this is what Jesus does with us: he does not establish rankings, he gives all of himself to those who open their hearts to him.
