Questions You Thought Don't Have Answers

Filipinos love a good riddle and answering crossword puzzles. Our desire to answer all the questions and completely finish the job gives us some kind of titillation, the need to continue and persevere until we accomplish the task. It tickles our brain cells, and we feel mighty proud once the cryptogram is decoded.

People ask why everybody loves Jessica Fletcher of Murder She Wrote? Or Ben Matlock or Jake and the Fatman.  Well,  they always solve mysteries.

Too bad, there are a lot of questions and mysteries out there that we may never learn the answers to their intriguing nature. The universe is far-reaching and its mysteries limitless, and there are many things that even geniuses have their arms raised upwards because they don't have answers to some of these queries.

Let’s explore some of the questions that seem to have no answers ... but they have.

Question: Nalulunod din ba ang mga isda?  This is a tricky question ... kaya ikaw tol...  intiendihin mo muna ang tanong bago mo sagotin. Wag kang pasikat. Okey?

In the first place ... lahat ng isda ay marunong lumangoy ... so bakit sila malulunod aber?

Ang taong nalulunod ... may dahilan. Siguro pinulikat siya ... or lasing siya ... at gusto niyang magpakalunod sa alak ... at sa dagat. Kaya ayon ... nalunod nga.

Sa isda meron ding dahilan. If you check your aquarium ... you will notice a fish that spend a lot of their time at the bottom of the tank. Alamin mo muna ... baka namamahinga lang ... or natutulog. Or baka sila yong mga isdang "bottom feeders" ... yon bang sa bottom sila ... yon ang paborito nilang hang-out. Maganda daw ang ambience.

Pero makikita mo rin agad ang mga isda that has a buoyancy problem - they are those fish swimming frantically with no direction ... and crashing at the bottom of the tank. If he keeps rubbing himself on the rocks and gravel ... and if he is floating looking tired and listless at the bottom ... may dahilan ... this can be attributed to excess air or constipation due to over-eating or eating too quickly (as in bondat na bondat). Kaya YES ... nalulunod din ang mga isda.

Or they may have a "swim bladder disease" - where the fish develop an enlarged stomach or intestine ... para din silang tao ... may flatulence at hindi mautot.  This is caused by poor water quality ... sudden temperature changes ... or overeating. Naimpatso sila. Distended stomachs in fish make them look like they can't swim ... hindi sila makahinga at kailangan nila ang oxygen . Kung wala ang O2 ... para din silang mga tao ... pwede silang matigok.

Do All Fish Swim?

Red lip Batfish - may bigoti na ... nakalip-stick pa

Question: Lahat ba ng isda lumalangoy?

Answer: Lahat naman di ba? But planet Earth makes it a point that there is always an exemption to the rule. For instance, a carabao usually has four legs, and it blows us away and it becomes an anomaly when a baby carabao comes out with three legs.

In the same vein ... all carabaos are colored black. It is a freak of nature and is considered abnormal to see a white carabao. But when an "albino" carabao is born ... it breaks the standard and goes against the rules of nature. This world is a freak show ... and no matter how abnormal it looks... all you can do is sit back and accept things as they are.

The red-lipped batfish is a case in point. Just because this creature is a fish ... we can't always assume that it can swim. These guys would rather “walk” instead of swim with their pectoral fins across the ocean floor.

If this fish does not swim (or they lack swimming skills) ... if that is not weird enough ... tell!

Another weird thing is ... when the batfish matures ... its dorsal fin grows into a horn on its head  ... making it look like a unicorn.

And there are more oddities. Although the fish is capable of swimming ... the batfish fins can double like pseudo-legs so it can walk unsteadily on the ocean seabeds when they are hunting for food. The batfish walk on these fins ... and like a bird, they use them to perch on while they inspect and size up the environment.

Other people observed ... their fins spread outward like batwings. That is why they are called batfish.

And the most outrageous of all is their red lips. Where can you find a fish fully made up and had Revlon or Maybelline lipstick on? The red-lipped batfish flaunts its outrageous scarlet pout with all the charisma of Ivana Alawi. No one knows exactly why the batfish sports its signature look, but it may help them to attract possible dashing batfish Romeo's at spawning sites.

They are friendly and curious too ... divers can attest that juvenile batfish tend to lead solitary lives ... but adult batfish are sociable ... they can form a school of batfish and they can even live side by side with other fish  ... they follow and play with divers as they survey the bottom of the sea.
