In a breathtaking display of unearned audacity, Vice President Sara Duterte recently took to the podium to announce: "Whether or not I become the next President of our country... the bar has been set high."
It is a truly mesmerizing statement. To claim that you have "set the bar high" before 2028 is like a student standing up in front of the classroom, throwing a blank exam paper at the teacher, and declaring, "Pass or fail, I have redefined academic excellence."
[ THE CLAIMED "HIGH BAR" ]
• Slogan: "Order, Integrity, Efficiency."
[ THE ACTUAL AUDITED REALITY ]
• Metric: Confidential funds spent in 11 days.
[ THE CLAIMED "HIGH BAR" ]
• Standard: "I refuse to let political pressure win."
[ THE ACTUAL AUDITED REALITY ]
• Explanation: "None of your business / Sub judice!"
[ THE CLAIMED "HIGH BAR" ]
• 2028 Ambition: "My purpose is bigger than presidency."
[ THE ACTUAL AUDITED REALITY ]
• Audit Verdict: Receipts missing, liquidation pending.
The fundamental delusion of modern Philippine politics is confusing the ability to win an election with the qualification to govern.
Winning an election in 2028 is merely a popularity contest fueled by family dynasties, massive machinery, and a loyal social media fan base. But a track record? A track record is a forensic audit.
[ THE CANDIDATE EVALUATION FLOWCHART ]
A POLITICIAN WANTS TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2028
│
▼
THE SURROGATE LOGIC:
"Malakas siya sa survey at kilala ang apelyido!" -> CONGRATULATIONS, QUALIFIED!
│
▼
THE FORENSIC REALITY CHECK:
"Ano ang nagawa? Paano ginastos ang confidential funds? Nasaan ang resibo?"
│
▼
POLITICAL MACHINE'S DEFENSIVE REFLEX:
"Aba, bakit niyo kami pinagiinitan?! Pamumulitika 'yan!"
To say that the "bar has been set high" implies that future candidates must now match your level of policy mastery. But if the current bar consists of blowing through ₱125 million in secret funds in under two weeks and treating basic legislative inquiries like personal insults, then the bar hasn't been set high—it’s been buried six feet underground.
In functional democracies, public service requires a very simple trade-off: You get public money, and in return, you provide public answers.
For Sara Duterte, however, basic accountability is rebranded as political martyrdom.
THE ACCOUNTABILITY TRANSLATION MATRIX
WHAT THE CITIZEN ASKS:
• "May we see the breakdown of this ₱125M allocation?"
WHAT THE DUTERTE CAMP HEARS:
• "This is a targeted political attack! You are persecuting me because of my last name!"
When asking for bank records or procurement receipts is treated as an act of harassment, transparency ceases to be a core requirement of public office and becomes an "optional favor" that politicians grant only when they feel like it.
You cannot demand unconditional public trust while locking the door to the vault and calling the state auditors "ingrato."
The Presidency is not an ancestral heritage site. It is not an heirloom to be passed down through bloodlines, nor is it a prize awarded for family brand loyalty.
THE "SPECIAL EXEMPTION" AUDIT
FOR OTHER CANDIDATES:
• Must show a PhD, decades of legislation, or pristine fiscal records.
FOR THE DUTERTE BRAND:
• Standard: "Matapang."
• Requirement: "Anak ni Tatay."
• Financial Audit: "Huwag na kayong magtanong, confidential 'yan."
The true comedy lies in the double standard. Partisans demand that every other candidate show an immaculate CV, a doctorate in economics, and 30 years of flawless public service. But the second their favorite political heiress is asked to explain a single line-item budget, they scream "bias!" and demand a special exemption.
If Sara Duterte truly wants to talk about setting high standards for the Presidency, then let us apply that high bar across the board—starting with her own office.
The question for 2028 is not whether she can win, but whether she has earned the right to be trusted with the national treasury. Competence, credibility, and integrity are not optional garnishes for a campaign slogan; they are the bare minimum.
If setting the bar high means demanding transparency, respecting public funds, and answering state auditors without throwing a tantrum, then by all means, let's raise the bar.
But don't be surprised when those who rely on secrecy find themselves unable to jump over.
