LITERALLY, all gone to the dogs means decline or deterioration, or has changed to a much worse condition. Or to become much worse in quality and character.
METAPHORICALLY, it means the situation has taken a distinct turn for the worse.
I saw this meme today, and my post title uses a dog in it ... because the meme has a dog in it too. No pun intended.
So the operative question is: had the meme really all gone to the dogs? It all depends on who looks at it.
A DDS may look at it as it was done in poor taste. How so? A meme about bodily functions is considered vulgar, uncultured, and socially inappropriate in mature or formal settings.
The author and their supporters on the side of the spectrum may find it, under the circumstances, the best interpretation of the way they see the situation as it is.
A meme is defined as an amusing or interesting image such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online, especially through social media.
However, meme makers should know the thin line that separates AMUSING and OFFENSIVE memes. I understand where the author is coming from, and I know the intent was just to inject humor.
The art of humor, however, relies heavily on the context and who the joke was shared with.
If someone is offended, regardless of intent, an apology is warranted.
