To Sub or to Dub That Is The Question

 

To sub or to dub that is the question. This is the first time I saw a Thai serye, thanks to the latest internet controversy: To Sub or To Dub.

And in fairness to both camps, I watch the Tagalized version of Still 2gether (dubbed) and then the original version (subbed). Gosh I came out a better viewer because I came out with better perspective about the options and I was able to contrast the two.

To understand them better, in subtitling the words are typed over a film in English language to translate what is being said by the actors. In dubbing the original spoken language of a film or television series was change to Tagalog.

People have been in dispute for a while which mechanism is a superior choice. Each has their advantages and disadvantages and, ultimately it is a matter of personal preference.

In subtitles as in Still 2gether you can listen to the voices of the original actors. Let’s face it, no one, and I mean NO ONE could EVER replace Sarawat or Tine's voice. That including accents & voice inflections plus mannerisms.

Second advantage It gives you the opportunity to increase your Thai vocabulary other than Sawasdee Krab. In dubbing, you can focus on the story as you watch a film in your native language. in subtitling, you squint your eyes reading the simplication of what is being said vis a vis savoring the first kiss of Sarawat and Tine. Simply said you can focus on the action.

Talking about disadvantages, in subtitles you can be sidetracked from the film action when you read the translation below and you will miss some of the feeling conveyed in the dialogue when you read the written form. If you are Thai who knows English you may be tempted to check the translation and see how good (or bad) it is.

In dubbing, editors try to match & organize what is being said to synchronize the mouth movements of the actors. Although not their fault, at times they're forced to modify the translation of the word in Pilipino for a better fit. This is frustrating especially when synchronizing fails. It is extremely disturbing to witness technical ambiguities: actors’ yelling and angry but not blending with the sounds and emotions required.

So which one is the better option. dubbing or subtitling? I patiently watch both and to my surprise the dubbing of Still 2gether is above par. You have to watch it to believe it. Watching subtitled Still 2gether was quite a strain for my eyes. Sad to say I miss to savor the emotions that goes with the dialogue, because I was busy reading the typed translation below.

To Pinoy fans who wants subtitling, I don't blame you if you want this option especially if you are used to this method. But in times of pandemic, we don't need to be choosy and act prima-donnaish. Let's be contented with what is being served on the table.

But sorry to burst your bubble, but nobody has made a study on its efficacy, and it doesn't have the imprimatur seal for distribution or treatment against Covid.  Not even in Peru. While there is no proof for its potency, the danger of its toxicity has already been documented and validated.

Breathing Chlorine Dioxide can irritate the lungs causing coughing and shortness of breath. Higher exposures can cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), a medical emergency, with severe shortness of breath.

Chlorine dioxide has been historically used as a disinfecting agent for drinking water supplies and surfaces. Widespread use as an alternative option for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 has emerged due to a lack of specific treatment. We present the case of a 55-year-old male who developed acute kidney injury and disseminated intravascular coagulation after chlorine dioxide prophylactic ingestion, with regression after therapy with hemodialysis.

Therefore, it is suggested to continue educating the population to avoid the consumption of this type of substance and the implementation of policies to regulate the information propagated by the media, to mitigate false news and promote evidence-based recommendations.

Multiple Victories in Pageantry

 After last year’s temporary slumber brought about by the China-made COVID-19 pandemic, the pageant scene bounced back in 2021 – with some international competitions (Miss Universe and Miss Grand International) even staging two separate editions for that year alone.

The Philippines already shaping a comfortable lead in the upper echelon of pageantry hierarchy and having won several titles in what is considered to be the four major international pageants: Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International, and Miss Earth, it looks like the crystal ball have a forecast of more rain of crown and titles on the horizon.

And in 2021, the Philippines again lived up to the title of Asian powerhouse as its representatives delivered high-grade and top-of-the-line performances, resulting in several crowns and podium finishes for the country. Undeniably, one of the biggest highlights for the Philippine pageant scene this 2021 is the winning of two titles, Miss Intercontinental and Miss Globe, in a span of just seven days.

Some countries' luck of having brought forth multiple victories, be it major or minor pageant is comparable to unexpectant parents delivering a twin,  a triplet, or a quadruplet.  They are described as productive, fertile, even spawning.

That's why some writers are asking what kind of water are they drinking in the Philippines, in Venezuela, Colombia, USA, Mexico, India, Brazil, and Puerto Rico, that when one wins the title, somebody will duplicate the same fate resulting to twin victories, sometimes even three or four.

Having multiple victories in mind we researched what countries were blessed with grand-slam achievements, that we need to be reminded, these are once their glory days and it needs to be celebrated.
