Fixation At Latency Stage

The latency stage (latent meaning dormant or inactive or unused) is the fourth stage of psychosexual development that is occurring between ages 6-12. At this time, the libido is dormant, and there are no sexual impulses because the child suppresses it.

This stage is a period of reduced sexuality - there is a mark quiescence, no libidinal urges, no erogenous zone involved, and there is a complete halt of sexual tension that is persistent in the previous three stages.

The latency stage is also known as the stage of competence where the child is eager to learn new skills. During this stage, the child compares his self-worth to others.

1. The Latency Stage - The latency stage covers the period of human development from 6 to 12 years old. It is considered an interval of relative calm - the child has dormant sexual feelings and interests. The libido is totally repressed and sublimated.  According to Freud, in contrast with other stages of psychosexual development, children are relatively free from the domination of the id and the child starts to turn away from family and face the outside world.

A. Latency Stage task -  New interests develop for the child and besides some maturity in sex; the child also develops a certain amount of physical and mental growth. During this time, Freud believed that sexual impulses were repressed, leading boys and girls to have little or no interest in members of the opposite sex. Boys go out with boys and girls with girls (not to be confused with homosexual relationships).

In the latency stage, the libido is in a "Do Not Disturb mood and mode ... and sexual energies are repressed and sublimated and are channeled by industrious asexual activities. So if you have a keen eye, a child works more on his or her social and communication skill which helps them build, identify and boost their confidence.  Their attention is directed toward the realities of life, activities, hobbies, and play; very little or no attention is paid to their sexual needs.

Freud believed that sexual urges from the earlier Oedipal stage are repressed and channeled into productive activities that are socially acceptable - academics and athletics.

To re-emphasize the stage ... the children disengaged from anything sexual and focus more on social and intellectual development. The child acquires new social values from same-sex peers outside the family.

D. Carry-over behaviors in the Latency stage.

Social development takes place during the latent period, social interactions, communication skills, and self-confidence. Children can become fixated or "stuck" in this phase. Fixation at this stage can result in immaturity and an inability to form a fulfilling relationship as an adult. 

Controversy about homosexuality being a carry-over behavior and a fixation in this stage ... is still met with reservation and a lukewarm response.  However, our college professor mentioned this and she warned us that although her theory doesn't meet blanket approval from experts and critics alike ... she said she should mention it anyway.

Homosexuality is a fixation she believed started in the Phallic stage and was reignited in the Latency stage. I actually don't succumb to her theory because the Hallmark signs of this period are the child's dormant sexual urges and the libido is on its sabbatical leave, and the child's activities are purely asexual ... so how would homosexuality fit in here?  But she stressed that the child choosing the company of the same sex peers ... and enjoying every second of it ... fixation can happen. She said, "Anything can happen."

She mentioned also the Phallic Stage (as the start of it all ... where the boy or the girl mimics and identifies himself with the parent of the same sex ... and anything more or lacking ... if the situation was not resolved ... we are treading the thorny path to fixation.  She also mentioned the fact that in the phallic stage, the toddler behaves too feminine (too soft for comfort) and the girl acts tomboyish.

Yesiree ... these facts don't lie, because I saw that too.  And although Freud has not given the imprimatur that homosexuality is a fixation that started from Phallic or Latency ... the fact remains ... my professor has some bragging point.

A Slip Of The Pen?

An occasional slip of the tongue ... or a slip of the pen is normal and is quickly forgiven by the person listening or reading... that is ... if they even notice it. Even when they do, most people most of the time will recognize a slip of the tongue or pen for what it is and realize that what you meant to say or write ... is not what you did say or write.

I don't need a STEM or a branch.  I need the WHOLE plant. And let me remind you ... I don't need MANGOES for my orchard ... I already have 50 of them and it's overpopulated ... with different varieties (carabao mango, Indian mango, Guimaras, apple mango, Thai mango (nam dok mai)

What I want is MANGOSTEEN ... and for a while, the label confused me ... that what you are selling are mangoes!

(PS: This happened today ... when I saw the labels, I was amused and intrigued.   For the first time in my life ... the price was not important to me. Whoever labeled that ... really did a number on me.)

Rigodon de Honor For It's Showtime

 

Ang saya ng rigodon ng mga nootime shows. Parang mga teleserye din.  Ito ang mga nagyayari  ... in chronological order.

1. Laughing Out Loud on TV5 was not rating.  So natsugi ito at pinalitan ng It's Showtime ng ABS CBN. That was just last month ... and now more changes are a-brewing.

2. Eat Bulaga is having rough sailing at GMA7 possibly because the ratings are plummeting. TV5 wants to have a noontime show of its own ... so it adopted Eat Bulaga and welcome them into their home.  On the other hand, GMA7 continued to Eat Bulaga with a new set of hosts.  TV5 is in a quandary about what to name their noontime show.

3. Since It's Showtime is being shown at 12 noon, and TV5 is planning to have its noontime show air at twelve ... they dropped Its Showtime like a hot potato.

4.  GMA7 comes like a knight in shining armor and offered a slot for It's Showtime on GTV, its subsidiary. 

ABS CBN has no franchise and is now concentrating on a new job as a content creator. Its Showtime is being shown on A2Z, Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, I Want TFC, and The Filipino Channel. Using GTV will totally improve Its Showtime reach on free TV.

Meanwhile, there is no update on Willie Revillame's Wowowin at AllTV. Willie was heard saying that AllTV did not suspend his show ... and it's on its way to opening its own studio.

Is The Big One Coming?

After 3 volcanoes showed signs of unrest ... one friend was asking if Mayon, Taal at Kanlaon has a chat group and it looked like the troika have texted and emailed each other, and agree to blow their steam together to make an impact. And a good scare to Filipinos.

As they make their presence felt, experts explained that they are not in any way connected, and it is just a coincidence that they are all acting up at the same as if giving us a full trailer of the BIG ONE.

Idioms of The Day

 

Let's start using idioms or idiomatic expressions when we write. When idioms are used, it adds color and texture to language by creating images that convey meanings beyond those of the individual words that make them up. An idiom can be very colorful and make a 'picture' in our minds. It also shows the writer's familiarity with English. When you want to make your writing sound more conversational, including idioms can give your writing a more relaxed tone.

Idioms allow us to say a lot with few words. Idioms amplify your messages in a way that draws your readers in and helps awaken their senses. It adds dynamism and character to otherwise stale writing. They make your writing less monotonous and your readers will think that you are smart and knowledgeable. All the while ... you only clothe your writing with elaborate idioms to create an impact... saying too much with less. 

To perfect your English, you really need to become confident in using idioms and knowing the difference between breaking a leg and pulling someone's leg. So the idiom of the day is:

IDIOM: Hit the sack.

MEANING: It's time to go to bed. Other idioms: hit the hay

ORIGIN: “Hit the sack” come from the fact that in olden times mattresses used to consist of cloth sacks stuffed with hay. Some historians go so far as to suggest that “hit the hay” and “hit the sack” come from the practice of fluffing up the hay inside the mattress before lying down to sleep.

USING IT IN A SENTENCE: The job interview will start at 8 AM ... so I might as well hit the sack.
