Ambeth Ocampo Reviewed Maid In Malacanang

Much of what is said online against "Maid In Malacanang are from people who haven't watched the film. Full disclosure I endured the film in Ayala Cebu the other day, so this frank review is not tsismis. Butthe film largely based on one unidentified person's jaundiced narrative, is tsismis.

Despite the distribution of thousands of complimentary movie passes and a captive 30 million fanbase, the theater was not as jampacked as I expected it to be. To be fair, viewers were attentive, laughed in the right places, and applauded at the end. I joined in the clapping too, but more from relief than appreciation.

Almost two hours of Cristine Reyes as Imee Marcos bought me perpetual plenary indulgences. Imee was depicted as a pouting, petulant, entitled b*tch in the opening scene who degenerated into a shrill, hysterical banshee for most of the film. As creative consultant and producer of the film, one wonders if Imee approved of the director’s treatment that failed to encourage pity, or at least empathy, for the Marcoses in their last 72 hours in Malacañang before they were driven into exile by the 1986 people power."

Are the Stars Out Today?

Not everybody has a chance to brush elbows with the stars in the entertainment, modeling, and pageant industries so when the invitation starts knocking at my door ... who am I to refuse. Others may frown at it ... but it is irresistible. Well-meaning friends have given us the opportunity on a silver platter (it is like allowing us to get something easily ... without having to work on it) so when I saw the window ... in basketball lingo - an opening ... all I did was to dribble the ball ... do the lay-up and shoot it for the much-needed money shot.

Actress and host Pauleen Luna were in her best element.  Meet her at Kamuning - and very approachable and she has ready Hi's for everyone.

When fan votes became a fad, I have some doubts that it will work. On the surface, the organization wants to empower the fans who want to learn more about the contestants and ultimately influence the outcome of the competition. The more fans learn about the contestants, the more engaged they become with the women as individuals, and as a result, they become more invested in the winner and brand as a whole. By having the fans play a larger role, we give them a voice and a platform to express their point of view.

Indeed, that was an awesome idea. But I don't think it will work with Asians the way fan votes is rocking the boat recently. I hate to say this but Asians are clannish and cliquish, and they are hardcore loyalists. So the fanvotes become patriotic votes ... and worse become a sympathy vote.  If you are an Indonesian for instance why will  they vote for somebody else when they can vote for one of their own? Just like last year Thai, Vietnamese, and Filipinos behaved the same way.

Based on personal experience I have seen Americans who can appreciate and ultimately vote for candidates other than their fellow Americans.  And I have seen Asians who can appreciate candidates of other countries, but when it comes to fan votes, whether their candidate is qualified or not ... they choose to become faithful and they choose the dutiful loyal citizen route.
