Mary Jane Lastimosa Iconic Bloopers

Mary Jane Lastomosa Miss Universe Philippines 2014 was just her effervescent self last Sunday in the coronation of the 60th-year celebration of Binibining Pilipinas 2024.

We have been monitoring her hosting skills and so far ... she delivered and held her candle being placed side by side with the loquacious Catriona Gray ... the multiloquent Nicole Cordovez and the verbose Kylie Versoza. I don't know if she made some booboos but the way she acted on the stage you'll never suspect she made some slips (Lapsus linguae) and besides being chatty herself one will always forgive and forget if there's any minor blunder.

I already mentioned this in my previous post when she did make quotable quotes ... but it is worth rehashing.

Kylie Verzosa: What are your thoughts on memorized answers?

Mary Jane Lastimosa: Oh I am being put on the spot. Thank you for that wonderful question. But I believed that as long as ang SAGOT ay hindi CHAROT ... mare ... OK lang yan.

Then out of the blue, she made this unexpected remark: .. "Once a Binibini ... always ready. Really MJ ... not once a Binibini ... always a Binibini? We heard this much over-used line before ... it is almost a cliche that I am refraining from using this line ... because aside from being worn-out and stale ... it is almost moth-eaten and mildewed. Was it included in the script to make people laugh? Was it a Freudian slip? Or a pageantry malapropism

To top it all ... when she was announcing the prizes the candidate would receive she was not blinking at all: "She will go home with a P150,000 cash prize and P500 worth of Beatederm products. Binawasan ni MJ ng P499,500.00. I just hope she didn't pocket it. She didn't even realize the "faux pas" ... despite Nicole Cordovez eye signal that she made a blooper.

MJ Lastimosa was really funny. Di ba pag nagkakamali ang mga beauty queens ... hinahayaan na lang natin?

Euphemisms are a common part of everyday language. They can be used to make something sound more pleasant, to present an idea in a certain way, or to disguise the purpose of something. Euphemisms are substitutes to topics considered taboo or embarrassing, such as using the toilet.

Euphemisms are important because they allow individuals to discuss challenging topics while still being polite.

A euphemism is a figure of speech. Instead of using a word or phrase that is considered to be offensive or that some may consider derogatory, a euphemism is used instead.

While euphemisms can be idiomatic they have a more specific purpose. Euphemisms are typically used to soften the tone for politeness or diplomacy. They are especially effective when speaking or writing about sensitive topics.

Examples of euphemisms:

  • A bun in the oven: pregnant.
  • No longer with us: dead.
  • Let go: fired.
  • Plastered: drunk.
  • Time of the month: menstruation.

What is a Euphemism? (Lesson and Activity)

Euphemisms

This is indeed funny ... but is it really happening in real life? A mother wants to save money ... by allowing kids to oversleep so eating will be just a one-time thing.

This reminds me of somebody who makes euphemisms (a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing) her way of life.

"Nagba-brunch na lang kami (breakfast and lunch) ... palagi kasing tanghali na magising ang mga bata."

Nakagawian ng mga bata na tanghali magising? Or nakagawi-an na lang ng mga bata na tanghali ng magising dahil wala namang breakfast? Which is which ba?

Sa mga parents ... huwag tayong mag-assume na dahil yon ang ginagawa natin (ang mag-brunch) ok lang sa mga bata kahit kumukulo na ang tiyan sa gutom?

Miss Supranational 2024 Continental Queens

The Miss Supranational Continental Queens from left to right: Bryoni Govender - -South Africa -Continental Queen of Africa, Andrea Saenz - Mexico-  Continental Queen of the Americas, Alethea Ambrosio - Philippines - Continental Queen of Asia and Oceana, Fiorella Medina -Puerto Rico- Continental Queen of Caribbean, Victoria Larsen - Denmark - Continental Queen of Europe.  The pageant was held on July 6, 2024 at Strzelecki Park Amphitheater in Poland.

Indonesia The New Powerhouse?

Indonesia's Harashta Haifa Zahra is Miss Supranational 2024. Congratulations to you and your country.

I want Indonesia to savor the intoxicating feeling of winning for the first time and I want our brother Indonesians to celebrate, drink, and toast ... this is another feather in the cap for ASEAN countries. Even Filipinos and Thais are happy with their achievement.

Understandably, because of their latest triumph, some tipsy Indonesians have gone beyond hangovers ... and let success spoil the best of them when they start bragging and making hyperbolic pronouncements that "they are at the moment the new powerhouse in Asia. "

I saw one critic's comment who got ticked off by the new viral FAKE NEWS that stems from MAGNIFIED and AMPLIFIED crowing and blowing off one's trumpet from a certain sector: "They seek attention, admiration, and respect from their peers and other countries ... and believe that boasting about their new achievement will make them feel more confident and valued.

Another reactor said that they like to brag because it gives them a sense of control. By boasting, they feel that they are in charge of how others perceive them.

Other critics have to make comparisons (like the image above) debunking the claim. I also made a post 3 days ago about how the Philippines managed to amass 42 titles and 27 runner-up spots (of all major and minor pageants) in the first half of 2024 alone ... a record that is second to none.)

While some egotists want attention and approval, others seek to bring shame or jealousy to others. "What jealousy are they talking about?" said one reactor. "There is no need to fuel jealousy, especially the Filipinos and the Thais. The number shows ... they need a lot of catching to do."

In all these heated debates on who's who in Asia ... I want to place myself in the middle of the warring factions. To other ASEAN countries please give them the chance to celebrate and digest the exhilarating effects of victory. They need that. Just understand that when you win your heart is full ... because of the victory the mouth speaks ... or the euphoria of the win affects the way they write or word their reactions ... to the point that they may sound boastful.

On the other hand, I also want to remind our friends and neighbors to be careful about how they choose to express their confidence. You can show your happiness ... but you are still mindful that you are not stepping on their shoes. When comments have been exaggerated and the readers smell braggadocio painted all over the page, you could wind up pushing people away instead of drawing them in. Instead of welcoming thousands of people from other countries sharing your latest blessing ... you drive them away.

Bragging about your achievements and personal qualities can poison the readers' perception of you.
