Idioms of the Day

Let's start using idioms or idiomatic expressions when we write. When idioms are used, it adds color and texture to language by creating images that convey meanings beyond those of the individual words that make them up. An idiom can be very colorful and make a 'picture' in our minds. It also shows the writer's familiarity with English. When you want to make your writing sound more conversational, including idioms can give your writing a more relaxed tone.

Idioms allow us to say a lot with few words. Idioms amplify your messages in a way that draws your readers in and helps awaken their senses. It adds dynamism and character to otherwise stale writing. They make your writing less monotonous and your readers will think that you are smart and knowledgeable. All the while ... you only clothe your writing with elaborate idioms to create an impact... saying too much with less. 

To perfect your English, you really need to become confident in using idioms and knowing the difference between breaking a leg and pulling someone's leg. So the idiom of the day is:

IDIOM: Killing two birds in one stone

MEANING: To achieve two things in one single action

ORIGIN: This phrase dates back to 1600 and references using a slingshot for a birding hunt.  Killing two birds with the same stone was virtually impossible, and the phrase was commonly used when completing two tasks at the same time by doing one action like riding a bike: 1) it makes you fit 2) it gives you transport at the same time.

USING IT IN A SENTENCE: I’m going to Kim’s to study. That way, we can spend time together and prepare for the test. It will kill two birds with one stone.”

Black Saturday Reality

Walang holiday ... ang mga taong mahilig mangutang. At walang Black Saturday at Banal na Araw sa taong nangangailangan.

Sa mga Maritess at Marisol ... wala ring day-off ...no respite and no sabbatical. Di ba dapat this Holy Week naka-zipper ang bibig?   Ayaw magsitigil kahit gamitan mo pa ng agua bendita. Uhaw talaga sa kung ano ang latest at mahilig magsulsol ha! Walang pinipiling araw.

Holy Week Irony

Holy Week irony ...  yong matapang mangutang ay nageenjoy sa beach.

Yong nagbigay ng pautang ... nagmumukmok lang sa bahay.

To Err Repetitively

To err is human ... so they say. Making a mistake is natural as breathing air.  The first time you make a mistake ... it is ACCIDENTAL.  But repeating the same mistake is considered  INTENTIONAL - consciously, knowingly, and willfully done.

It is okay to have flaws once in a while, but it is not okay to keep on repeating them. Otherwise, you learned nothing from the situation. The mistake will recur and will happen again ... until the person learns his lesson and will pay a heavy price.

The fact of the matter is ... since the act was repetitive ... some say it is SERIAL - that's why we have serial killers, serial rapists, and serial arsonists in our midst. They are crimes that are repetitive in nature. 

And not to be forgotten... the SERIAL mangungutang who always feels short with his finances at ang hirap pa singilin. He always say hindi niya tinitipid ang sarili sa pagkain which is admirable and honorable ... pero hindi ba within your means lang ang paggastos mo at kung kapritso lang ng asawa at ng anak ... gusto mong mabaon sa utang dahil sa napakabait mo?

When Once Is Not Enough

People have a mistaken notion, that repeating the same mistake ... is still a MISTAKE. No way Jose. Repeating the same mistake is your CHOICE  ... you liked it ... so you chose to do it. 

You can never make the same mistake twice, the second time you do it is no longer a mistake ... but your FASCINATION.

Repeating the same mistake is a HABIT for you. It becomes your pattern, to put it bluntly, your ADDICTION. 

Of course, it is normal to make a mistake ...  but repeating the same over-used mistake narrative becomes your template, your trademark, and your TRADITION. Some people call it STUPIDITY.

So don't bother apologizing for the mistake if, in the near future, you will do it again. It becomes repetitive it is starting to bore me. Ho-hum.

Jesus Christ was crucified because of our mistakes, our choices, our fascination, habits, addiction, tradition, and stupidity. Let Holy Week remind you of His passion and suffering and be grateful for His gift of Redemption.

Good Friday

What should I focus on and reflect on this Holy Week?

I should focus on Christ's crucifixion, the Passion, His Resurrection, and the events that led up to it. That includes His triumph over death and the hope and salvation that His resurrection brings.

And lastly, I should focus on how to apply Holy Weeks lessons to my life and recommit to living as His disciples every step of the way.

Just a Holy Week thought:

If you always choose GOOD FRIDAYS in whatever you do. there will never be EASTER SUNDAY.  

There will never be REDEMPTION if you always opt to go LEFT than RIGHT. Consider listening to your parents ... they will never let you go astray ... even if you think you know too much.
