Holy Week Musings

This Holy Week magnilay-nilay naman tayo.

More Chocolate Meme

I can't help but reprint the post of Mel Aguinaldo.  His meme ... and most of all the caption that goes with it manage to put a smile on my face as I struggle to come out sane from all this Chocolate Hills insanity.

This is what he wrote:

Dear Bohol Resort,

Gusto na din lang magtayo ng resort sa tabi ng isang National Geological Monument, eh dito na lang sana kayo nagtayo sa tabi ng Mt. Mayon para mas big time. Walang aalma sa iyo dito at mainit-init pa yong swimming pool ninyo. Suggestion ko lang naman.

Don't be angry.

Just,

Bicol

See ... very respectful naman ang sulat  ... at nagsa-suggest lang naman siya. But one thing is sure naghuhumiyaw ng SARCASM ang message niya.

Satiric, ironic and sardonic. Being sarcastic is when one intentionally inflicts pain by deriding, taunting, or ridiculing ... and Mel Aguinaldo succeeds on all fronts.

Opinion ni RR Enriquez : Gawing Disneyland ang Chocolate Hills

What will happen if all preserved geological sites turn out na parang isang perya na lang sa mga town plaza.

As far as I know ... Proclamation No. 1037 declared the Chocolate Hills a protected area, designating it as a National Geological Monument and a Protected Landscape.

Section 20 of Republic Act 7586 or an Act Providing for the Establishment and Management of Natural Integrated Protected Areas System, states that it's illegal to hunt, destroy, disturb, or merely possess any plants, animals, or products, dump any waste product, and alter, remove, destroy, or deface boundary marks or signs, among others.

And with that said comes this follow -up question. Ano ba ang dapat mag-iral ... batas or negosyo ... kapritso or turismo?

Itanong nga natin kay RR Enriguez  ... dahil matapang siyang naglahad ng kanyang OPINION pabor dito ... as if her opinion matters. Pagkatapos niyang mamahinga sa showbiz ... I wondered when did she gave her last opinion on matters something of this magnitude ... at may astang paghahamon pa ng debate?

Opinion nga ba ... or just an attempt or scheme para pag-usapan? Magbalik TV ba siya at kailangan niyang mag-viral sa social media?

I have nothing against RR Enriquez, but how she rephrased her arguments irks the reticent and restrained ME.

Dyuk ... Dyuk ... Dyuk

Police: Lola ... bawal tumawid diyan.  Sabi nga ng signage: "No Jay Walking."

Lola: Nakita ko po.  Anong akala mo sa akin ... malabo ang mga mata?

Police: Namputsa naman. Eh bakit ka diyan dumaan?

Lola: Hindi kita nakita ... yon lang yon!

Definition

Gala definition - O baka may magkamali ang iba diyan at baka isipin na "gala premiere" or "gala night" ang word to be defined today.

It is actually a Tagalog term (maragsa at may konting diin sa second syllable at hindi malumay ang pagkabigkas) na ang ibig sabihin mamasyal or magbakasyon.

But the best definition I can think of sa gala is: GAGASTOS TAYO para magpa-picture. Or gagala tayo as an excuse to flaunt our bodies.

Idiom of the Day

Let's start using idioms or idiomatic expressions when we write. When idioms are used, it add color and texture to language by creating images that convey meanings beyond those of the individual words that make them up. An idiom can be very colorful and make a 'picture' in our minds. It also shows the writer's familiarity with English. When you want to make your writing sound more conversational, including idioms can give your writing a more relaxed tone.

Idioms allow us to say a lot with few words. Idioms amplify your messages in a way that draws your readers in and helps awaken their senses. It adds dynamism and character to otherwise stale writing. They make your writing less monotonous and your readers will think that you are smart and knowledgeable. All the while ... you only clothe your writing with elaborate idioms to create an impact... saying too much with less.

To perfect your English, you really need to become confident in using idioms and knowing the difference between breaking a leg and pulling someone's leg. So the idiom of the day is:

IDIOM: Crying Over Spilled Milk

MEANING: The idioms "Don't cry over spilled milk" means it is not wise to dwell on past events because you can't change them. What's done is done. To lament on something that has already happened ... and spend sorrow and your precious time thinking what you have done better is an exercise in fulility.

ORIGIN: Don't regret what cannot be undone or rectified. The metaphor for the inability to recover milk once it has been spilled has been used as a proverb in James Howell's Paroimiografia (1659). The phrase used to be “No weeping for shed milk.” Then it has metamorphosed a bit over the years to “No use fretting over shed milk,”  At present, it is now “There's no use crying over spilled milk.”

USING IT IN A SENTENCE:  Yes you made a booboo ... but please move on. There is no point in crying over spilled milk.

Idioms In Tagalog

One of my friends asked:  "Are there idiom equivalents also  in the Tagalog language?" Of course, there are.  Katulad ng idioms sa English, ginagamit ito para tumingkad ang paglalarawan ng mga bagaybagay at para mapaigting  at matalinhaga ang takbo ng usapin o pagsusulat.

And just like in English ... ang kahulugan ng mga "sawikain or idioms" ay magkaiba sa literal meaning ng mga salita. Sa madaling salita ang mga sawikain don't mean exactly what the individual words in it say. Tandaan natin ... ang figurative meaning ng mga sawikain ... is different from its literal meaning.

Kung tinatanong ka ba ng "Nagdadalawang isip ka ba?" walang masamang kahuluhan yon. Literally it meant two thoughts. Pwede ba yon? Meron bang taong dalawa ang isip? Ano ba yan "buy one ... take one?"

But seriously ang figurative meaning nito ay naguguluhan ka sa pagdesisyon.  Pwede ring you have second thoughts on something. Yon bang feeling na you start to worry ... or you start doubting whether ang ginawa mo ay tama o mali as in pagkatapos mong magpahiram ng pera sa kaibigan ... kinutuban kang hindi ka niya babayaran.

Pwede ring siya ay nagiisip ng hindi maganda sa iyo. Examples: "Nagdalawang isip ka bang tulungan ako?" Or "nagdalawang isip ka bang mahalin ako?"

And using the cartoon above: Can you imagine Ikakasal ka na lang ... nabulilyaso pa? Kasal na ... nagiging bato pa?
